Ok, if you have started writing your first post as scheduled, it’s time for you to fine tuning your blog.

It will take continuous improvement to get your blog working to the exact way you wanted, and let’s start to fine tune a few of the basic but important settings for your blog.

Title and Description

First you will need an appropriate title for your blog, short but descriptive. And then you will need a description or tagline that can further define your blog in one or two simple short lines.

Some people likes to have catchy title and description, that’s up to personal preference but what I always want is for readers to be able to reach my site searching for what I am writing, and being descriptive with the important keywords in the title is the essential option to do so.

Example this blog I am basically using the domain name as title, Malaysia Weblog is the domain, and Make Money Online is the subdomain. And the description is simple and further enhances the ideology for this blog, which is to provide “Tips and guide to make money online for Malaysians and worldwide webmaster.”

My title and description might not be catchy, but it’s straight to the point, first time readers will always know what to expect from this blog.

For Wordpress users you can simply edit the title and description under the OPTIONS > GENERAL link. Pardon me but you will have to figure out how to edit your title and description on other blogging platform.

SEO Friendly Permalink

Each of your blog post will have an URL of its own, we’ll use permalink as reference for these URLs. Including your post title in permalink has been identified to play a decent factor for search engine to define the importance of your page.

If I’ve not mistaken, blogging platform like Bloggers/Blogspot have SEO friendly permalinks by default. Some other blogging scripts like Wordpress are not using it as default option, but can be change easily to use the SEO friendly URL.

For Wordpress just go to OPTIONS > PERMALINKS and do necessary editing as instructed with their simple guide.

It’s important to have appropriate categories for your blog, it will show a clearer picture of what your blog is about and enhance readership experience. Take a bit of time and create a list of categories that you might be using and make necessary settings for your blog.

There’s no real limit on how many categories you can create for your blog, but do keep it within a range below 20. Sometimes it can be confusing if you have too many categories for your blog, first time visitors might be overwhelmed by the topics you try to cover and scared away.

There are many plugins that can further enhance the usability of your blog. I have been recommending Wordpress but frankly the script is not perfect and need a few plugins to optimize the usability.

Don’t be mistaken though, the script does work fine and it can work without any plugins. What the plugins do is to save time and make posting and updating effort easier, as well as enhancing the reading experience of your visitors.

We shall cover about plugins later on, you can work just fine by using the Wordpress script at it is.
